What's special about special library advocacy?
Date: Tuesday, October 3, 2006
Speaker:
Wendy Newman
Celebrate Canadian Library Month at our first event of the 2006-2007
programming year ... cake will be served!
Advocacy should be perfectly at home in special libraries; but is it?
Learning how to advocate for library and information services within our
workplaces starts with dispelling the myths of library advocacy, and
exploring how to capitalize on our own unique environments.
With the right tools and mindset we can all create a strong professional
presence where ever we work. Join us for this interactive program as we
learn from one of the best. Bring your advocacy issues to the program,
or send them in advance to caslis_registrar@yahoo.ca, and you'll leave
with the tools needed to address them.
Wendy Newman has long been recognized for her efforts in librarianship
and advocacy. She combines special library experience, years as a
library administrator, and has been involved in every aspect of library
service. Wendy is currently Senior Fellow at the Faculty of Information
Studies, U of T, where she is contributing directly to the future of the
profession.

Statistics are pervasive, and are an
essential source of quantitative data, but the concepts and variables
used in compiling statistics can be daunting. Understanding what it all
means can help. This program will help you make sense of the world of
collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical information. Join
CASLIS as we sort out Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.

From Librarian to Headhunter or Fundraiser: Working
in Prospect Research
Date: Thursday, March 8, 2007
Speakers: Erika Steffer
and Radikha Jaggermauth
Prospect researchers play a key role
in fundraising and headhunting by matching organizational needs and the
individuals who can best meet them. At the highest level, this involves
not only understanding the organization and its value proposition, but
also knowing the individuals who will both be attracted to and fit well
with the opportunity whether as executive or as donor. Above and beyond
research, prospect researchers require significant analytical,
communication, and project management skills, as well as more specific
competencies depending on their roles. Erika and Radikha will talk about
life in executive search (a.k.a. headhunting) and major gifts (a.k.a.
fundraising) as ways to broaden and apply your library and information
skills in new and interesting ways.
Location:
Metro Hall, Room 304, 55 John St. (King/John)
