Leading information projects with aplomb: working constructively with IT

Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2005
Speakers: Beatrice Kerr, Manager, Business Information Services, Deloitte & Touche, Martin Tomlinson, Manager, Research & Information Management, Blake, Cassels & Graydon and Tim Tripp, Senior Project Manager, Shared Information Management Services, University Health Network

A long-standing issue for many special librarians is how to work most constructively with IT in their organizations. While internet-based information products have alleviated some earlier tensions related to desk-top rollouts, other concerns remain. With neither group the primary focus of an organization, how they choose to deal with scarce people and financial resources can see turf battles for greater organizational recognition, or, conversely, allow each group to play to its strengths and see both shine. Bea and Martin share their experiences of creating and maintaining positive working relationships with IT at Deloitte & Touche and Blake, Cassels & Graydon respectively, while Tim shares his insights from the "other side" having moved into IT at the University Health Network

Location: Metro Hall, 55 John Street (King/John), Room 307 (3rd floor)*
Time: Name tag and receipt pick-up at 5:30 p.m.; program 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

*Please note - the CASLIS Toronto summer mailing incorrectly listed the location for the November program as the Faculty of Information Studies. The correct location is Metro Hall.

Public Companies Public Information: a primer on discloser

Date:
Wednesday, February 8, 2006
Speaker: Raymond Chan and Matthew Au, CA CFA Accountants, Investment Funds, Ontario Securities Commission

They're a public company! Surely they have to disclose this information!?" We've all heard something like this before. The age of ready information and fuller, more complex disclosure requirements suggests that information about public companies should be more plentiful than ever before. Clients' demand for more detail and quicker turnaround often means the frustration not finding what is needed. While this program won't necessarily make the information you need magically appear, it can help you negotiate the regulatory world in which public companies operate. Knowing what is available, and why, will allow you to better manage, and satisfy, client expectations.

Location:
FIS Lounge, Room 728, Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto, 140 St. George Street
Time:
Name tag and receipt pick-up at 5:30 p.m.; program 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $20/member, $30/non-members, $10/students & unwaged; Members can subscribe to all five programs for the price of four!

From Be-Bop to Hip-Hop -- 50 Years of Information Work:
A Special Evening with Retired Professor Emeritus, Dr. Nancy Williamson

Date: Wednesday, May 3, 2006
Location: Enoch Turner School House, 106 Trinity Street, Toronto, ON
Speaker:
Dr. Nancy Williamson
Time:
Registration: 5:30 p.m.; Dinner and AGM: 6:00 p.m.; Speaker: 6:45 p.m.

Join us for a remarkable evening featuring outstanding library educator, international consultant, and library association leader, Nancy Williamson. From her start as a Reference Librarian in 1950, Dr. Williamson has been plugged in to the information industry. Generations of information professionals know her from their days in the classrooms at the University of Toronto, where she was a professor (and professor emeritus) from 1965-2005. Dr. Williamson surveys the profession from 1950 to the present, highlights shifts in how we organize information and interact with technology, and explores the impact of these changes on the principles, values, fundamentals and norms of its professionals. This is an evening not to be missed!

The Enoch Turner School House, Toronto’s first free school, is a unique museum experience. It is a journey back in time where one can experience first-hand the life of a working class child in 19th century Toronto. One block east of Parliament, just south of King Street East. The King 504 streetcar stops right at Trinity Street.

Dinner includes Beef Bourgignon, rice, salad, and dessert (there will be a vegetarian option as well).

Since this is CASLIS Toronto's Annual General Meeting, you may attend the AGM portion of the evening (6:00-6:45 p.m.) FREE-OF-CHARGE (dinner not included).  Simply indicate this when you register online.
