Positive Politics: How Information Professionals Can Contribute to Building a Healthy Workplace

Date: Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Speaker:
Ulla de Stricker

CASLIS Toronto Chapter is pleased to present Ulla de Stricker giving a talk that was extremely well received by the Edmonton Chapter of CASLIS earlier in the year. As one attendee attested, “With her usual high energy, Ulla delivered compelling content with wit and clarity.”

When a workplace “works” it is no accident. It takes concerted effort - on the part of everyone - to create an atmosphere that has team members looking forward to Mondays! Chances are, scant attention was paid to the matter during our formal education … but fear not. The characteristics and behaviours going into building a positive workplace are simple and can easily be learned because they are based on something so fundamental as “bringing our humanity to work”.  Ulla outlines straightforward ways managers and team members alike can contribute to creating a supportive and productive environment.

Ulla de Stricker’s consulting practice focuses on strategies for information and knowledge management. She is a well-known figure in the Canadian information and library community, having been active in it for over 30 years. A frequent contributor to the professional literature, she is a popular conference speaker with a reputation for her inspiring sessions - check out www.destricker.com for more information.

Location: Canadian Broadcasting Centre, 250 Front St. W. (Front & John). Please check in at the John Street Security Desk. Members of the Executive will be on hand to escort you to the CBC Conference Centre on the Third Floor, where our event is being held.

Why Copyright? The Fight for Canada's Digital Future

Date: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Speaker: Dr. Michael Geist

In June 2008, the Canadian government introduced Bill C-61, new copyright legislation that closely followed the
U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The public response to the bill was both immediate and angry - tens of
thousands of Canadians wrote to the Minister and their local Members of Parliament, leading to town hall meetings,
negative press coverage, and the growing realization that copyright was fast becoming a mainstream political and policy issue.
The "Canadian copy-fight", which includes many new advocacy groups and the Fair Copyright for Canada Facebook group that
has over 90,000 members, has attracted considerable attention from the mainstream media, with many wondering how
copyright had emerged as a contentious policy issue. This talk will assess both the legislative proposals and the Canadian
copyfight experience in an effort to answer the oft-asked question – "why copyright?".

Dr. Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa, where he holds the Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law. He writes a column on technology law issues that regularly appears in the Toronto Star. He is the author of the textbook Internet Law in Canada (Captus Press), now in its third edition, and the editor of In the Public Interest: The Future of Canadian Copyright Law, published in 2005 by Irwin Law.

Dr. Geist serves on the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s Expert Advisory Board and maintains privacyinfo.ca, a leading privacy law resource. His work has been recognized with several important awards including the 2008 Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award. In 2003, he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.
